Two years ago the Beaverton High School boys cross country team finished the season 0-5 in league meets and last at the district meet. No one finished in the top 10 as an individual. Additionally, the boys team finished the season with a 4-1 record in league races and took second at the district meet as a team and had two runners in the top 10. They went on to finish seventh at the state meet as a team and had one runner in the top 10. This year no one knows what is going to happen to the team but everyone knows it is going to be an exciting season. That is where I come in and help sort out the chaos that will take place over the next two months until the state meet.
This year Beaverton returns five of their seven varsity runners, including their top two. They have 12 boys who could race varsity at the district meet. The team could change every meet of the season. The Beavers are also trying to run down a state meet berth and an even better season then before. Below are the 7 runners who I will focus on this season.
Kevin Kavanaugh- A sophomore and a top ten runner in the state last year. He was the first person ever to win the Metro League district meet as a freshman. He has a PR of 15:48 over 5000 meters.
Dan Oekerman- Another sophomore on the team ran to a top 40 place in the Oregon State cross country meet as a freshman, along with a personal best of 16:08 in the 5000.
Hussein Mohamed- A junior who is running his first year of cross country. In track he ran a 4:20 in the 1500 and 2:03 in the 800.
Daivik Orth- A senior who is entering is fourth year of cross country. Since freshman year he has dropped his pr by over a minute to 16:51. After a summer of training he is ready to break through in big ways this year.
Jeff Reintjes- Another senior and a captain on the team. This is his second year running cross country after switching from soccer. Last year he ran to a personal best of 17:28 at the district meet.
Jake Fenger- A sophomore who is entering his second year of running. Last year he was J.V. but this season is out trying to prove he belongs on the varsity team. Last year his pr was 19:39, but after a long summer of training he is ready to bring that time down.
Eric Olsen- Eric, a junior, is running his first season of cross country. In track he had personal best of 2:18 in the 800.
These are just seven of many guys who could run varsity. If anyone makes a move they will be showcased along with what that means for one of these men who gets moved down. There will be a new post about every week about what is going on with the team race wise, along with any fun things that are going on with the team. Stay tuned for next weeks blog when the men of Beaverton toe the line in their first meet.
